Happy Lonely Hearts Club Day! It’s the day after Valentine’s Day and if you went to sleep alone last night, this day is for you!

Do something indulgent, grab some ice cream out of the freezer and stay right in bed.

You will not regret this decision.

You will not regret this decision.

Or better yet… grab a guitar and your media production suite, hike into the woods to a remote cabin, and get your heartache out in song. It worked for Justin Vernon.

After a sad break up and while recovering from a case of mononucleosis, Vernon retreated to his father’s remote cabin in Wisconsin to work on his 2007 debut “For Emma, Forever Ago.” The album, which was recorded by Vernon as a demo, was a catharsis for the singer songwriter. It also helped him earn widespread attention by music audiences everywhere and then an official release from a major label.

Released under the band name Bon Iver, the album is a collection of songs which highlight Vernon’s soft and sad falsetto voice. It’s notable that Vernon played all the instruments and worked on most of the production himself. (It’s also notable that it was the least annoying and intrusive use of “auto tune” that year.)

Here’s some of the best live performances by the artist, including one video showcasing two songs from his second album, “Bon Iver, Bon Iver,” which featured the backing band members he added for the live tour of his first album.

Listen, enjoy, and know you are not alone in this world. Except if you are Justin Vernon’s ex-girlfriend.
